Pantheon, greatest women

King Louis XV made a promise to Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris, to build a new church if he ever recovered from a serious illness. Ten years later, in 1754, the first stone was laid. The work will last thirty three years and will be completed in the midst of the French Revolution. It was then decided to erase its monarchic past by converting it into a temple to house the remains of all the illustrious men and women of the nation.  Its architectural style given by Soufflot whose project was to incorporate the lightness of the Gothic style with the purity and magnificence of Greek antiquity is just striking as well as  the number of personalities buried in its crypt. Some of the "pantheonized" figures are Victor Hugo, ardent defender of the Republic and one of the greatest writers of the nineteenth century, philosophers of the enlightened epoch such as Voltaire and Jean Jacques Rousseau, as well as an unequal number of women. Among them the scientist Marie Curie, two heroines of the resistance, Germaine Tillion and Geneviève de Gaulle Anthonioz and Simone Veil and her commitment to women's rights.
